  • Nest is a smart-home-devices company acquired by Google in 2014.
  • Calico is a project to increase human longevity.
  • Sidewalk Labs is all about improving modern cities.
  • Google X is the company's moonshots division, housing the company's ambitious projects such as Google Glass, internet-delivering high-altitude balloons, and so on.
  • Fiber builds high-speed internet connections.
  • Google Capital is its investment arm, which is distinct from Google Ventures, the search giant's venture-capital investment vehicle.
  • Google is, well, Google. It contains most of the products that ordinary consumers associate with the search giant, including Search, Android, and Maps. It is worth noting that YouTube, despite already having its own CEO, is not being spun out.

Email is not dead, but for teamworking...

Back in 1971  when  email first ancestor was invented, the original idea was to  just send a message to another person in the same computer, for that purpose a program was developed (SNDMSG), at the same time a protocol  to read and write  files from a remote computer was also developed  (SPYNET), this two pieces of code were combined and the first email program was born.

More than 40 years later, email is still prevalent and very few technologies can outboast from that, email has certainly made its way into human culture and with the advent and comoditization of Internet it  has been embraced  as the main communication method for many years, times are bit different now and millennials are using  it less and less every time, most of them see it just as a requirement for singing up to a social network, why is that, you may think. well for many of us, from the generation X and precedings  its the only way we´re been using for communication and helping us organize our work around, but for them (millennials) its social networks are a more effective way of communicating and sharing, remember, this is the time of cant´t wait, instant and easy access, and that has permeated business too.

One of the  most important shortcoming from email show up when you and your mates  try to do some teamworking, you find yourself and your team's conversations  lost among lots of emails popping up every other second, keeping up with the thread is very hard, and for those newcomers to the conversation almost impossible, as a result your business is less efficient, you loose time, opportunity and many times even money. We agree with you, email just (you know the word) for teamworking.

As we have already stated, business have been influenced by social networks and now you find your team (like it or not) finding their way around using social networks to get their job done, but another shortcoming arises being  confidentiality one of the most important.

Nowadays, you have to embrace a new communication method, one that makes your work teams more efficient, you need to embrace an Enterprise Social Network, which also easies its adoption because its just takes advantage of that social networks inertia but at the same time offers security and confidentiality,

Keep tuned with our blog and the latest news and information about Enterprise Social Networks, you'll discover a better and more productive way to do business.

For Managers, Directors and CEOs: What is an Enterprise Social Network and its benefits for your business?

What are Enterprise Social Networks?

My best, and humble, attempt to describe it in a simple way is “a social network with collaborative capabilities running inside your organization”. From this starting point you can imagine a lot of workers interacting, sharing and working in common documents, well that wasn't too difficult to imagine. But since the “Enterprise” noun gives the whole name the sense that has been created for a business purpose, then you now may be thinking. “uhmm this thing might help me with my work in my organization”.

How you actually do your work

Now that you have an idea of what a ESN is, let’s go deeper and find out what’s for and its benefits. But first let´s see how you and your work teams manage daily in your Job:

You and your workmates use different tools to get all your job done, from email to skype to coordinate and send and receive files; copy-paste to update the last minute changes maybe in your intranet or dropbox; G+. facebook or twitter for communication with outside parties or virtual work teams, each tool provides its own strength.

These real-world scenario highlights two important things:

  1. Social media's undervalued impact within and between organizations.
  2. The extended use of these platforms to improvise and organize new ways to get the job done.

The problem using external platforms

Now, what’s the problem with communicating, coordinating and sharing ideas using this platforms?.

Since people inside organizations use external platforms to facilitate their work, they expose and leave sensitive information in others’ storage different than yours. Another one is that most of the employees send themselves files to their home emails or use other ways to share important documents. and finally the time consumed (wasted) using unauthorized platforms like dropbox, facebook, twitter, G+, etc

What are the benefits for employees and the organization?

We can finally talk about ESN benefits and I’m going to split them into the ones for workers and the ones for the organization.

For employees:

  • They now have a common hub where they find everything they need
  • They can do their work faster and with more efficiency
For organizations
  • Have a controlled, secure and easy platform
  • Have a way to collect, organize and share corporate knowledge in a managed environment
  • Reduce hidden cost from time spent in different platforms and tools
  • Provide not just a communication and collaboration tool but also empower the individuals and teams to achieve faster decision making and foster innovation

I´d like to emphasize that these last benefits are rarely mentioned, but are from the ones that manage the organization or business point of view even as important as the workers's benefits

The bottom line:

ESN are not just about communication, coordination, collaboration and transparency but about empowering individuals and teams, also about securing and managing corporate knowledge.
